The Hawk excels in its generator monitoring capabilities, with the ability to integrate multiple sensors to provide a comprehensive view of various conditions from a single device.

What is a Generator Monitoring System?

Generator monitoring systems work by recording and communicating the condition and operational status of generators. This involves extracting and measuring a series of parameters, such as fuel levels, voltage, current, and temperature, and sending this data to software for analysis and task management.

The Importance of a Generator Monitoring System

Generator remote monitoring is crucial for ensuring uninterrupted power supply and operational efficiency on a large scale. By providing near-real-time data and early detection of issues, sensor-based monitoring enhances reliability, reduces maintenance costs, and supports sustainability efforts by optimizing energy usage.

  1. Reliability and Uptime: Remote monitoring can help ensure that generators are always ready to provide power during outages. This is especially important in environments such as hospitals, data centers, or industrial facilities.

  2. Preventive Maintenance: Regular monitoring helps identify potential issues before they lead to failures, allowing for timely maintenance and repairs. This can help minimize downtime and extend the life of the equipment.

  3. Safety: Remote monitoring can detect unsafe conditions such as overheating or fuel leaks, preventing accidents and ensuring the safety of personnel and equipment.

  4. Regulatory Compliance: Many industries have regulations requiring regular inspection and maintenance of backup power systems. Remote monitoring can help ensure compliance with these standards while minimizing manual intervention.

Generator Monitoring Device: The Hawk IoT Data Logger

The Hawk excels in its generator remote monitoring capabilities, a remote solution with the ability to integrate multiple sensors to provide a comprehensive view of various conditions from a single device. It supports remote operation and fuel monitoring, detailed diagnostics, and engine health assessments, ensuring optimal operational efficiency.

  1. Near Real-Time Data Collection: The Hawk IoT Data Logger collects data on generator performance in near real-time and can provide insights into operational status and health with minimal delays on the data.

  2. Remote Monitoring: It allows for remote monitoring, eliminating the need for physical inspections and enabling quick response to issues.

  3. Integration with Existing Systems: The Hawk can integrate seamlessly with many legacy generator systems, allowing for convenient retrofitting.

  4. Alerts and Notifications: Users can set up “on device” alerts for specific conditions, such as low fuel levels or maintenance needs, ensuring rapid notification should defined conditions be met.

  5. Device Management: Using Digital Matters Device Manager, clients can control all aspects of the Hawk remotely. This includes applying system and admin parameters, updating firmware, and viewing device logs to remotely debug.

How does the Hawk work?

The Hawk IoT Data Logger functions by connecting to various sensors and monitoring equipment installed on generators. The Hawk can connect to existing generator control units in a variety of ways, but the most common is RS485 (Modbus). The Hawk enables effective generator monitoring by:

  1. Data Collection: The Hawk is installed alongside generators and generator control units to capture data on water flow, volume or any other variable that may be of interest.

  2. Data Transmission: Using NB IoT or LTE-M technology, the Hawk transmits this data to the cloud.

  3. Data Analysis: The collected data can be analyzed to identify usage patterns, detect anomalies, and schedule predictive maintenance .

  4. Alerts and Reporting: Users can then set up alerts for specific conditions (e.g., excessive fuel usage) and generate detailed reports for analysis and decision-making.
