What is SDI-12?

SDI-12 (Serial Digital Interface at 1200 baud) is a communication protocol used primarily for environmental data collection. It’s designed to connect data recorders with microprocessor-based sensors, making it ideal for applications where multiple sensors are deployed over large areas, such as in agricultural, hydrological, and meteorological monitoring. 

Key Features of SDI-12: 

  • Low Power Consumption: SDI-12 is particularly suited for battery-operated systems, as it uses minimal power. 
  • Simple Wiring: It uses a single data wire for communication, along with power and ground wires, which simplifies the installation and reduces the cost of wiring in field deployments. 
  • Multiple Sensors on One Line: Multiple sensors can share a single bus, allowing them to be individually addressed and queried by a data logger. This makes it very efficient for collecting data from multiple points. 
  • Digital Communication: Despite being a low-speed protocol (1200 baud), it provides accurate and reliable digital data transfer, which is less susceptible to noise compared to analog signals. 

 

How It Works: 

SDI-12 uses a simple ASCII-based command/response structure where the data logger sends a command to a sensor, and the sensor returns its data as ASCII characters. This allows for straightforward integration and interoperability between equipment from different manufacturers. 

Specifically, the Hawk only utilizes M! commands. This keeps sensor integrations simple and as ‘plug and play’ as possible.
